Yunex Traffic delivers cutting-edge AI traffic detection to transform safety and flow at busy Surrey intersection.

  • Surrey County Council selected Yunex Traffic to deploy its AI-enhanced video detection technology at a complex intersection in Woking.
  • The Yutraffic awareAI system meets the council’s need for accurate detection at the intersection, and to collect data to better understand road network usage.
  • Advanced video analytics deliver accurate, multi-modal detection and data insights to provide enhanced traffic management and control.

Poole, UK, 15 July 2026. As part of a major refurbishment programme following the relocation of Surrey County Council’s Corporate Hub to Woking, Yunex Traffic has deployed its Yutraffic awareAI advanced video detection solution at a flagship intersection adjacent to the new offices. Together with a new controller and the installation of the company’s latest Yutraffic Actis ELV LED traffic, the deployment showcases the council’s commitment to innovative technology, which will enhance the performance and efficiency of its traffic management, signals and control systems.

With a complex layout of pedestrian detection zones at the kerbside and crossings, along with stop lines and junction exits, achieving precision was critical. Yunex Traffic’s advanced detection solution Yutraffic awareAI was chosen for the scheme because it delivers exceptional detection accuracy as well as collecting valuable metadata around the intersection. This insight will enable Surrey County Council to understand how different user types, such as cars, cyclists, and pedestrians, interact with the network. With this knowledge, the council can make data-driven decisions to improve safety measures, optimise signal timings, and plan future infrastructure upgrades that support sustainable travel and reduce congestion.

Yutraffic awareAI combines AI-enhanced machine learning with video streams from up to six cameras to deliver highly configurable detection, classification, and real-time data insights at traffic signal intersections for up to 12 vehicle classes, including count, speed, and occupancy.

The installation in Woking includes four video cameras for optimum coverage and detection. Three wide angle cameras provide close coverage for the detection of pedestrians and cyclists, as well as vehicle approach areas and stop lines, with one narrow angle camera providing detection further afield. Completing the technology package, smartmicro MLR (multi-lane radar) units are also being deployed to provide extended range detection. This has converted the site to have only above ground detection, eliminating the need for future maintenance of detector loop slot cutting.

We are committed to exploring innovative solutions where we can clearly see tangible benefits. Yunex Traffic’s advanced perception system stood out as it offers more than conventional detection, with the potential to replace multiple detectors through a single system.

We were particularly interested in its ability to capture rich data – such as traffic counts, classification, and speed – as well as its potential to provide live video streaming. The data would not only support our traffic signals team but can be shared with other highway teams, widening its value across the organisation. The availability of live camera footage is extremely beneficial for network management, giving us real-time visibility of conditions on the ground. The systems adaptability and remote configurability also allow us to easily define and adjust monitoring zones to analyse traffic and pedestrian flows.

Another key factor for us was the licensing model, which removes the need for ongoing subscription fees. We are pleased with the system and see strong potential for its future growth as Yunex Traffic continues to develop its capabilities.

Traffic Operations Team, Surrey County Council

Looking to the future, Surrey County Council will be trialling the use of AI derived data to influence traffic signal operation, consideration is being given to enhanced pedestrian priority at times of high pedestrian demand as well as the safety benefits or detecting delayed cyclists, travelling through a junction at the end of the vehicle green period with the various facilities Yutraffic awareAI offers.

We are proud to have worked with Surrey County Council to deliver this transformative solution. Less disruptive, more cost-effective and data-rich, Yutraffic awareAI is the natural successor to traditional detection methods such as loops and redefining multi-modal traffic detection.

Providing the same detection capabilities, but with the added benefit of data provision, Yutraffic awareAI draws on the power of new technology to deliver enhanced traffic management and control.
